Pham Cong Duc Tai and Le Quoc Anh, grade 12, Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted, successfully manufactured a device to monitor people wearing masks in public places.

The mask-wearing monitoring system of two male students has just won the first prize in the provincial science and technology competition and the 3rd prize at the national level for high school students.

In October 2020, after two Covid-19 outbreaks, Duc Tai (specialist in Mathematics) and Quoc Anh (specialist in News) found that the functional forces had to supervise people wearing masks, which took a lot of effort and time, so they discussed how to respond. Using artificial intelligence, machines do this work.

In order to save costs, the two male students take advantage of available materials in the family, especially electrical circuits, cameras, and electronic equipment must be ordered online. “At first, we had a lot of technical difficulties. And the software kept having errors because the device had a strong configuration and the materials could not meet it,” Quoc Anh said.

After 3 months of tinkering and fixing these errors, the two boys completed the device. The system is a combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision and loudspeakers. The device consists of main parts, camera, server, data storage drive, speaker, monitor screen located in public places such as parks, schools, supermarkets…

When someone passes by, the camera will identify and determine whether this case is wearing a mask or not. If not worn, the speaker will emit a warning sound and record a face image. These images will be saved to provide functional forces as evidence to punish violators.

Two excellent students from Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted plan to upgrade their devices to be more stable and responsive after completing their high school exams in early July.

In addition, the two male students also want to put temperature cameras into the system, update the “black list”, prevent violators from participating in community activities.
